A 3D scanner is an optical instrument for reconstructing the 3D geometry of objects or people, to reproduce their exact shapes and dimensions in a digital 3D model.   Optical 3D scanners are non-contact 3D systems. Objects can therefore be digitised in their entirety without their surface coming into contact with touch probes, as is the case with co-ordinate measuring machines (CMMs).
